Rebel Basketball

By Kyle Killen and Xavier Huetter:

The 2018-19 Seton-La Salle boys’ basketball season was a resounding success. Since 1982 the Seton-La Salle Rebels have won 12 section titles, two WPIAL championships, and one State title. However,  there are big shoes to fill after the graduation of star players such as Jacob Richardson, Nicholas Deans,George Mike III, Matt Banbury, and Kaleb Krebs. But coming off of a WPIAL 2nd place finish the previous year, this  team has a lot to prove. However, with a final record of 20-6-0, the team seems to have picked up right where they left off. Returning players Trevor O’Donnell, Michael Bigley, Dylan Preston, Jacob Verner, and Cole Walsh, were a big part of the team’s success.

Bigley has been the starting point guard the past couple of years, and when asked about the hot start to the season he said, “Just like every year, our goals are to win a section and WPIAL title”. Despite the loss of 5 seniors this past year, the 2018-19 Seton-La Salle Rebels are off to quite a hot start.

Unlike last season, this year’s team is comprised of mostly juniors and sophomores, rather than seniors. In fact, there are only 3 seniors on the team this year: Jim Weldon, Nate Ault, and Trevor O’Donnell. Trevor O’Donnell is a 4 year player and Nate Ault has played for 2 years. Both players have had a direct impact on the team’s success these past 4 years. First year Seton-La Salle senior, Jim Weldon, transferred last year and left his impact on the program. Weldon started this season as a reserve, but quickly became a key starter as the season progressed. Other young players such as Sophomores Griffin Malloy, Luke Banbury, and Daniel Boehme play key roles this year and have played an impactful role in winning games this year. Despite the lack of seniors, this team has found a way to remain successful. The future looks bright for the Rebels.
