In like a lion and out with basketball? Ladies and gentleman, March Madness is right around the corner. Soon it will be time to construct your brackets and aim for greatness. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament will begin on March 21st, which will attract millions of people of all genders and ages to establish their systems and make their picks. This begs the question, why is March Madness so appealing to people of all genders and ages? In my opinion, two of the main reasons that March Madness is so popular are the elements of randomness and spontaneity. An average Joe can construct a bracket and it may become as equally successful as an ESPN analyst. Another reason that this tournament has become so popular is that people have created polls that award the winner money, and let’s face it, who doesn’t love to win money from their friends? This allows for bragging rights and something to hold over those friends’ heads until the next debate .
March Madness has begun to take over Seton-La Salle. On March 17th, when the brackets come out, one will be hard pressed to find students without a bracket in their hand. Why is March Madness is so fun to participate in? Every student interviewed responded to this question with a different answer.
Senior Patrick Kenny said, “I love to beat my friends with my bracket. It gives me bragging rights over them, that they cannot deny.”
When asked the same question, Junior Evan DeKlaven answered, “It gives you something to look forward to during the school day. It excites you to see the scores and you constantly check for updates.”
Senior Julia Rodaitis responded, “I like making them simply because it makes the guys look stupid when I beat them.”
This year, NCAA basketball has had more than its share of dramatic upsets. If sports fans take their cues from that, then we can conclude that are no clear favorites or sure things, which pretty much guarantees that we should expect the unexpected. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing for your future bracket, it will certainly keep us all guessing and ensure that March Madness will undoubtedly live up to its name.
