On Tuesday, February 4, Seton-La Salle was proud to welcome the world-renowned conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Manfred Honeck, to speak at a diocesan-wide event hosted at the school. Seton-La Salle students were joined by students from Aquinas Academy, Bishop Canevin, Central Catholic, Oakland Catholic, OLSH, and Serra Catholic to hear Maestro Honeck’s presentation on his career and how his faith in Christ impacts his life.

As a man of great faith, Maestro Honeck wants to spreads the joy and love that he finds in Christ through his music. He came to Seton-La Salle to speak to like-minded young people, musicians and singers and actors and artists alike, to express his beliefs in the importance of faith in one’s life.

The assembly began with Seton-La Salle’s own liturgy choir singing a contemporary six part piece entitled “Pie Jesu,” led by soloists Rachael Ellis and Jena Grgurich. The SLS liturgy choir was directed by Mrs. Kathryn Wray, with Elise Zielinski performing on the piano and Liz Wildenhain on the flute.

Shortly after the choral presentation, speakers  Dr. Latusek and Fr. Lengwin both gave a short introduction to welcome Maestro Honeck. After he was introduced he gave a talk about everything from his own upbringing in Austria, to his job with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, to the closeness he feels to Christ, and the faith that he so deeply feels and wishes to express through his music.

The assembly was finished off with Maestro Honeck himself conducting the Seton-La Salle band, as well as the attendees of the assembly, in a performance of “Jupiter” (also known as “O God, Beyond All Praising”); one of the movements of the piece that he will conduct this Saturday at “Catholic School’s Night” at the symphony.

Being able to host such a talented and spiritual man like Maestro Honeck was both an honor and a privilege for Seton-La Salle, and the event was appreciated by all who attended.
