This February 13th marks the 21st anniversary of the annual LoveWalk for the Poor. It begins with mass at Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside. It is asked that you bring a donation of non perishable food items, baby wipes, or toddlers diapers (which will be donated to Angel’s Place, East End Cooperative Ministry, and possibly other organizations that serve the poor). The Bishop will be celebrating the mass, which is always a lovely thing. There will also be a speaker from a local service organization. After that, you carry your donation for a roughly one mile walk to East End Cooperative Ministry in order to walk in solidarity with the homeless who do something similar to this every day in order to stay alive. Cookies and other light refreshments will be served at the end of your walk. This is a great opportunity to serve your community and praise God simultaneously.
This is going to be my third year going on the LoveWalk and my second year being apart of the Catholic Youth Educational Services (CYES) team that plans this event. The first Lovewalk was in 1990, there were only 36 people that walked. Twenty years later, there were about 800. That same year, LoveWalk fell on a date during the infamous snow storm of 2010. Even though the walk was shortened to the point where it was just walking around the block, I was still amazed at the number of people who came. Let’s try to make this year even better!
