The Seton-La Salle girls basketball team puts together a great collection of talent every year, and this year will be no different with Pennsylvania State WPIAL Champion starters returning and the addition of star athlete Yacine Diop.
Spencer Stefko was hired as the new head coach and looks to continue the outstanding tradition of the girl’s program. With an enthusiastic and positive attitude he hopes to get premium effort out of the girls and they will be able to compete at a high level of competition this upcoming season.
After losing to Bishop Canevin in the WPIAL and State playoffs, the girls look to bounce back and return the title to Seton-La Salle.
Three of the Lady Rebels starters, including seniors Naje Gibson, Yacine Diop, and junior Cassidy Walsh, have all recently committed to the University of Pittsburgh. Also in the starting lineup is Junior guard Nicolete Newman, who has contributed greatly to the Rebels success for the past two years. Sophomore guard Shaunay Edmonds completes this deadly starting lineup with her experience last year as a freshman and her natural talent. Role players off the bench that look to add to the team are expected to consist of guard Julie DeKlaven and forward Morgan Henderson.
Senior Yacine Diop, originally from Senegal, had to sit on the bench last year and watch the games due to WPIAL restrictions, but is now finally eligible to play.
When asked if she was ready to get back to play she said, “Yes! I am so pumped for this season, I can’t wait to get back on the court this weekend.”
The season opens up December 7th with a highly competitive tournament in Virginia. The team hope to get some wins this weekend and roll right into section play with some confidence.
Newman said, “We look to learn from our mistakes last year and use the losses from last year as motivation to get back to the championship.”
Junior Cassidy Walsh said “ I’m most excited for the very competitive games that are on the schedule, especially the game against the fifth ranked team in the country. The competitive games are what makes the game fun.”
With loads of experience, competitiveness, and athleticism across the board, this season of Rebel Girls Hoops has high hopes.
Everyday they are looking to make each other better and improve week by week as the season rolls along.
Lastly, Diop left us with this quote “Talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
