Hunting For Birdies

For the second straight season, the boys golf team here at Seton-La Salle has had an undefeated season in the section. The team went 12-0 on the year. There were 8 golfers on the team: 1 Senior: Zachary Folino, 2 Juniors: Ben Osterhaus and Nick Waskiewicz, and 5 Sophomores: Jake Verner, Chris Panza, Gunner Conner, Jacob Kubick, and Chase Moses. The team was dominant, defeating teams by a margin of either 15 shots or closer to 80 shots.

“Not letting a team close to within 15 strokes is an impressive feat,” Junior Ben Osterhaus said. “Over the last two seasons, we have won 26 straight matches, and set a school record. I’d say we did pretty well.”

No matter where or who they played, there was no slowing the team down. Perhaps a good luck charm for the team was Zach Folino YELLING about the team, the opponent they faced, and where the team played every morning they had a match, making sure everybody in the school was aware of it.

The team qualified for WPIAL playoffs and narrowly missed qualifying for the 2nd round by a few shots. Waskiewicz, Verner, Panza, and Connor all made it to the individual round of the WPIAL Playoffs. Panza placed first overall, with Verner and Waskiewicz also qualifying to make it to the second round of playoffs. In the second round,

Verner qualified to make it to PIAL individual state playoffs.  Verner didn’t qualify to make it to the next round. “The course wasn’t in the best of conditions,” Verner said, “but I know I could have played better to qualify.”

“I’m really happy with how the team performed this year.” said Head Coach Chuck Rutter, “After coming off of a season like last season, I had high expectations, and the team met them.” When asked about next year, Rutter said “We want a year just like 2017, but I want 2 individuals that go to states, and 1 individual that will make it in the top 10 of states.”
