The Girls’ Basketball team has had a good year so far due to hard work and competitive practice.  Coach Ian Barrett said, “It’s had its ups and downs. We started with a very tough schedule, playing a lot of highly ranked teams, but I feel that this group of girls has really bonded as a team and are ready to make a playoff run.”

Their win to lose ratio is 6-7 overall and they 3-2 in their section. Starters are Layni Ziegler (PG), Abby Marzina (SG), Alyssa Pollice (SF), Meghan Dryburgh (PF), Bridget Hart (C). The coach said that the game that mos sticks out in his memory is the Carlynton game, “With the combination of Layni and Abby, we held one of the top scorers in the WPIAL to zero points.”

Coach Barrett says that the teams biggest strength is endurance. “ The girls have been working hard since the summer. We put a lot of time in the weight room and running the hill that goes up to the football field.”

He went on to say that their strength and conditioning coach, Mike Semplice (‘97), has really helped the team too. “It seems most teams are gassing out in the second half, that’s when we get stronger.”

According to Layni Ziegler, a member of the girls basketball team “It’s been altogether good. We’re a young team and we’ve learned a lot about each other and who we are as a whole.”

Regarding her coach, Ziegler said “I’ve known him since 4th grade so we have some history together. I like the way he coaches us. He understands the needs of the team and I know he wants nothing but success for every one of us.”

Many teams at Seton LaSalle are driven by intense rivalries. According to Ziegler, girl’s basketball is no different.  “Bishop Canevin is a huge rival for us, they are talented team but our section is difficult so we go into every game thinking its a big one.”

The team is also driven by in-house competition.  “During practice we push each other to be better each other better,” said Ziegler.
